L.A. Itinerary: BY THE BEACH

If you missed the Anywhere Anywhere Passport to Los Angeles, here’s the second of the five itineraries included in the guide:
BY THE BEACH

LA’s beach cities range from the hip, bohemian enclave of Venice to bourgeois but beautiful Malibu. Make sure you take at least one drive down the Pacific Coast Highway, whatever the weather.

9am

Start the day on a wholesome note with a smoothie from Sun Life Organics in upmarket Point Dume - the ‘Wolverine’ with almond butter, Maca and coconut manna makes for the most satisfying offering on the menu.

11am

Hop in the car and head towards Zuma Beach, where the sand is white, the lifeguard stands are aqua blue, and the beach is wide enough that you won’t be towel-to-towel with your neighbour.

1pm

There are few alfresco dining experiences better than lunch at Malibu Seafood, where plates of freshly- caught pink seared tuna and grilled shrimp are served with a view of the Pacific Ocean.

3pm

Cruise down the Pacific Coast Highway towards the hipster surfing community of Venice Beach. Park up near Abbot Kinney Boulevard and spend an afternoon checking out chic stationery at Urbanic Paper Boutique, elegant silk dresses at Flannel, and chic womenswear at Satine.

5pm

Stop in at Intelligentsia and pick up an ‘Angeleno’ iced coffee to go, then walk towards the boardwalk and spend an hour taking in its unique blend of skate kids, stoners, freaks, geeks, and rastas on rollerskakes. Watch the sun go down with an aperitif at the High Rooftop Lounge on the roof of the nearby Hotel Erwin.

7pm

Eat dinner like a local at neighbourhood favourite Superba Snack Bar, where they serve delicious homemade pasta and decadent salads (don’t miss the smoked bucatini or the watermelon with crispy fried chicken skin croutons). On chilly nights, bundle up under a thick, Mexican blanket on the patio outside.

9pm

Round off the evening with a quick drive towards the bright lights of the Santa Monica Pier for a trippy but romantic nighttime ride on a ferris wheel overlooking the ocean.
