I’ve been on the açaí hunt since I left Rio. Over there, this potent purple berry is mixed with achingly sweet guarana syrup, blended with ice, and served in a sugary sorbet that’s more addictive than crack. Or so I imagine, Sadly for me (but probably not my teeth), its Los Angeles equivalent - as seen here at Liquid Juice Bar on Melrose Avenue - is far less sugary, but apparently no less addictive. Since sampling this version, in which the açaí is blended with apple juice and topped with granola, banana, blueberry, strawberry, coconut flakes, bee pollen and honey, I can think about little else.
Actually, most things from Liquid leave me craving a return visit - this organic juice bar does some of the best smoothies and juices I’ve ever tried. The ‘Mental Miracle’ (also with açaí, plus blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, pecans & dates) is the type of thick, sweet, energy-boosting concoction that smoothie fantasies are made of. Because we all have plenty of those, right?
