This part of City Road has to be one of the least inspiring stretches in Shoreditch, which makes hidden bar The Nightjar - located down a flight of stairs between a couple of grimy cafes - all the exciting to discover. Once you make it past the stern face at the door (be sure to reserve in advance) you’ll discover a dimly-lit drinking den that feels like something from a past era.
The menu keeps up the theme, with a dizzying list of libations that are split into pre-prohibition, prohibition, and post-war offerings (with a smattering of Nightjar Signatures alongside) that are mixed to perfection and served at your table. The drinks are strong, the jazz is live, and there are plenty of dark corners to disappear into with your drinking partner of choice. Speakeasy perfection.
